Skilled Workforce One of the most productive labour forces in the world One of Antwerp’s less talked-about but no less valuable assets is its people. A major centre of trade for centuries, Antwerp’s cosmopolitan society is an historic melting pot of languages, cultures and ideas. Today, its renowned schools, colleges and universities continue to produce a highly educated and highly productive workforce.

High productivity Well trained and highly flexible, Antwerp’s diverse workforce is widely regarded as one of the most productive in the world. This high level of productivity is a direct result of the Flemish secondary and higher education system offering an extensive range of specialized degree programmes and a strong emphasis on written and spoken language skills.

Multilingual workforce Though Antwerp is a Dutch-speaking city, its people are renowned for their excellent language skills that go hand in hand with the city’s long tradition of international trade. English and French are the most common second languages although many Flemish also have a command of German, Spanish, Italian and/or other languages. Eurostat statistics indicate that more than half of all students in Flanders are expected to have mastered three foreign languages, well above the E.U. average.

High-quality education Flanders’ secondary education system is widely held to be amongst the best in the world. Not only do Flemish students score well across all study domains, the standard deviation between the strongest and the weakest is relatively small, ensuring a consistently high level of education amongst a larger body of students. When it comes to higher education, Antwerp and its surrounds form one large knowledge centre with some six universities and more than 20 colleges in a radius of just 60km. In addition to the University of Antwerp, the city is also home to several specialized knowledge centres.
