Foreign investment A city you can count on The city of Antwerp boasts one of the most open economies in the world and as such is a prime location for foreign investment. Moreover, it is one of the fastest growing regions in Europe and matches its unique economic potential with a number of measures aimed at stimulating foreign investment even further.
Open economy Belgium has the most open economy in Europe, trading in goods and services worth nearly 1.7 times its gross domestic product. In this respect, Belgium occupies fourth place on the world stage, behind Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Naturally, the port of Antwerp plays an important role in handling this gigantic flow of trade and remains a powerful economic engine in Belgium and the wider region.
Foreign direct investment Antwerp accounted for more than one quarter of all foreign investment projects launched in Belgium in recent years, adding further evidence to the economic potential of this dynamic region. Several measures have been implemented aimed at promoting Antwerp as a business city with a strong international focus, creating an even more favourable environment for ongoing investments.
Taxation incentives One such initiative is the notional interest deduction: a unique taxation measure in Europe which does away with the discrimination against companies who finance their own operations. Under the new law, companies who invest their own venture capital are able to deduct a fictive amount of interest to offset their total fiscal liability. Together with the new ruling practice that allows investors to calculate the fiscal implications of investment decisions up to five years in advance, these and other taxation incentives are helping to create even greater fiscal security for companies with a vested interest in the Antwerp region.
